The Problem?
Many people lack awareness about the risks of skin cancer and don't have easy access to preventative care or reliable information. This gap in education and resources can lead to delayed diagnoses and increased health risks.
The Solution!
A mobile popup with the goal to increase access to dermatology services and empower individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent skin cancer through education and early detection.
Community Research
To shape SPOTlight around real community needs, we surveyed the public about the impact of skin cancer. Here’s what we learned.

How many hours do you spend outside?

Do you know how to spot skin cancer?

How serious is skin cancer to you?

Would you go to a free skin cancer screening?
Market Research
We looked into existing dermatology pop-ups to learn what worked and where we could potentially improve. Those insights shaped SPOTlight’s direction.

Medical Research
Part of our research explored how sunscreen, UV rays, and sun exposure affect the body. We wanted SPOTlight to focus on the areas of dermatology that impact people most.
Sunscreen
Skin Cancer
-
Physical (mineral) and chemical sunscreen type
-
Both reflect UV rays, they just have different ingredients. One is not better than the other

Diagnosing skin cancer is done by a medical professional
-
examine skin
-
excising (removing) a sample of the skin for biopsy
-
- Treatment can involve:
- With small, localized cancers: usually the original excision for biopsy is enough
-
Freezing with liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery).
-
Excisional surgery
-
Mohs surgery
-
Curettage/electrodesiccation/ cryotherapy.
THE BIG IDEA?
The research highlighted a clear need for greater awareness, access, and early detection. SPOTlight was created to close that gap in knowledge — making skin health awareness accessible to everyone!
Branding
SPOTlight’s branding draws inspiration from the sun—warm, bright, and inviting. We used organic shapes and colours inspired by the
UV spectrum to reflect our mission of awareness and care.

Low-Fidelity Prototypes
Inspired by the idea of a traveling mobile unit, we designed SPOTlight to meet people where they are. Our digital prototypes include a website to reach people online and a physical kiosk that streamlines check-ins at each pop-up location.
Kiosk Wireframes
We created two kiosk flows to reflect real user experiences — one for
visitors with appointments and another one showing a day of walk-in.

Scheduled Appointments

Walk-ins
Website Wireframes
The website was designed to serve as the central hub for SPOTlight — sharing information about our mission, educating users about skin cancer, and offering an easy way to schedule appointments. Our wireframes focused on creating a clear and concise flow that balances accessibility with information.

The website flows prioritized laying out the information so we could better visualize the end result. Adding our brand colours and illustrations would come after!
High-Fidelity Prototypes
For our final steps, we focused on adding colour, animations, illustrations, and cohesion to make the project as polished as possible. The visual system ties back to our research — highlighting warmth, clarity, and trust through every click the user makes. For this step we also included physical mockups of both the mobile unit and sunscreen handouts!
Kiosk
The finalized kiosk included the two user options — one for scheduled appointments and another for walk-ins.
Website
The finalized website features cohesive colour, animation, and expanded information to create a more engaging experience for users.
Mockups
Using Adobe suites, we created physical mockups of the mobile unit that would host the dermatology appointments, sunscreen handouts, and environmental graphics promoting our event!
